The Challenges
With the growing demand for future-ready, sustainable constructions, the client realized that eco-friendly building methods are of utmost importance in the future. With this in mind, they considered developing a 3D concrete printing software app to take sustainable construction methods to newer levels. Such a software app could help architects optimize resources, time, and cost.
However, developing a 3D concrete printing software app involves precise engineering, and that’s where the client faced hiccups. Without an experienced team of developers, creating a 3D concrete printing software app is challenging. Such software requires teams to apply solid logical reasoning to bring perfection to 3D printing. So, the client urgently needed a proficient team to take the onus.
At this stage, they came across Capital Numbers’ past projects and were impressed with our programming knowledge. They trusted us with their project, which required highly complex coding abilities.
Our greatest challenge was to apply sequential logic to help create unique 3D designs of buildings. But, the work needed a lot more than creating sequential logic. We had to develop code with extremely tight tolerances and high accuracy. It had to be superior-level precision engineering to ensure accuracy in 3D designs.
Plus, we had to ensure the app is a Windows-based solution that runs even in offline environments. This ensures teams can continue 3D design work even from remote construction sites where Internet connectivity is at an all-time low.
Solutions We Offered
We jotted down the above points and began by developing a proof of concept (PoC) to validate the project's technical feasibility. With insights from the PoC, we created a Minimum Viable Product (MVP). We developed the MVP using C# and .NET. Our experts chose these technologies because they help streamline processes for handling 3D slicers and G-code in 3D printing.
Simply put, 3D slicers and G-code help specify how the actual printer in a construction environment should move, layer by layer. The 3D slicer takes CAD files (e.g., DWG or .STEP files) and divides them into individual layers, generating G-code for each step. This G-code then guides the physical 3D printer on moving and depositing concrete, ensuring each layer aligns perfectly with the one below it.
We worked extensively on 3D slicing technology and G-code logic to ensure little room for deviation from the intended designs. We also added custom settings to give users control over nozzle diameter, rotation angles, print speed, material density, and other parameters they’d like to adjust.
In addition, we applied smart logic to streamline several key features in the app. First, we ensured smooth file imports, making it easy for users to upload their CAD files. Second, we worked on validation alerts to notify users if they entered any wrong parameters so they could correct them before 3D printing. Third, we included dynamic text boxes to display relevant information in real-time and image displays to help visualize designs effectively. Fourth, we added features for angle calculations to ensure proper alignment of 3D components. Fifth, we ensured that 3D printing reports were saved in PDFs for future downloads and references.
With clear milestones, we achieved each of the above tasks on time. The combination of 3D slicers, G-code logic, and custom features enabled us to roll out a vivid 3D concrete printing solution that construction teams could readily adopt.
